Bottom line
The custom ASIC story is margin destruction dressed up as innovation: Impinj is trading pricing power for volume guarantees while pretending it's strategic. The headline will focus on Walmart food, but that's been pushed to H2'26 at earliest while retail customers are actively destocking. The binding constraint is retailer balance sheets, not RFID adoption. 'We're pricing the chip to market,' Cary admitted, which means commoditization has arrived. My view changes if software revenue actually materializes or food volumes show up before Q3'26.

The 30-second version

  • Custom ASIC for logistics customer is the real story: margin compression masked as innovation
  • Food rollout is 'modest' through H1'26 despite Walmart fanfare
  • Channel inventory 'corrections' hit for the second straight year at the same customer
