Bottom line
Gen2X is quietly revolutionizing Impinj's competitive position, creating a virtuous cycle where better reading drives M800 adoption which drives more reader deployments, yet the market is missing this because everyone's focused on the headline beat. Yes, they crushed numbers with 28% EBITDA margins, but strip out the $16M licensing payment and margins are barely improving despite M800 promises. The binding constraint is their inability to convert enterprise 'engagement' into measurable revenue growth: endpoint IC revenue is still declining YoY despite all the solution wins. Management said 'Gen2X is driving demand for our products and platform' but refused to quantify that demand in dollars or units. My view changes if Q3 product gross margins exceed 54% without licensing help.

The 30-second version

  • Gen2X is creating a virtuous demand cycle that nobody's talking about
  • Beat and raise looks great until you realize it's all licensing revenue
  • Channel inventory mysteriously declined despite partners 'strategically building optionality'
