Bottom line
The Corning deal is clever financial engineering that leapfrogs peers on domestic content without capital requirements, but they're hemorrhaging cash on merchant sales they can't afford to make. The binding constraint isn't demand (58 GW pipeline!) but working capital and margins: they literally can't afford to sell at current market prices. Management's quote about 'working capital intensity and competitive economics of spot sales' is code for 'we're getting killed on price.' My view changes if they successfully monetize 45X credits at >$0.02/watt in Q3 and secure G2 financing without massive dilution.

The 30-second version

  • The real story: Corning wafer deal is a capital-light synthetic vertical integration play that just leapfrogged peers on domestic content
  • The obvious: Sold out at 2.6GW but merchant margins are getting crushed by tariff uncertainty
  • The red flag: 45X eligibility countdown has a December 31 deadline they're dancing around
