Bottom line
The sleeper story is STX has completely sold out nearline capacity through December, yet the market fixates on HAMR delays while missing that this supply constraint hands them pricing power they haven't had in years. Yes, HAMR slipped another quarter, but the 28TB PMR drives already ramping make that delay largely irrelevant for now. The binding constraint isn't demand or technology, it's their refusal to add capacity, which is either brilliant discipline or dangerous conservatism. Management's tell: 'We're being very careful with adding more capacity... we can't tolerate another dramatic downturn.' My view changes if competitors announce major capacity additions or if Q1 FCF genuinely goes negative despite the growth.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper: Nearline supply is SOLD OUT through year-end while competitors have slack
  • HAMR qualification slipping to September isn't the story; the story is 28TB PMR already shipping
  • Free cash flow guide 'at or slightly above breakeven' for Q1 is the hidden warning
