Bottom line
STX is hiding HAMR economics while the PMR supercycle masks operational issues. The Street sees recovery, but I see a company refusing to quantify its most important technology transition while gross margins mysteriously expand on declining volumes. The binding constraint isn't supply, it's HAMR yield and qualification delays that management won't admit. Most revealing quote: 'We expect an appreciable increase in HAMR shipments' which is the exact same language from three months ago. My view changes if they provide actual HAMR percentages and explain the gross margin math.

The 30-second version

  • HAMR is finally ramping hard but management won't quantify exabyte contribution
  • Revenue beat but $200M supply shortfall masks true demand
  • Gross margins expanded 70bps despite nearline decline, a mathematical anomaly
