Bottom line
The sleeper story Wall Street will miss: ProPetro is harvesting diesel fleets 25% faster than expected while using lease accounting to mask the true unit economics of their electric transition, creating an optical EBITDA problem but a real FCF windfall showing 69% conversion despite margins compressing. The obvious 29% EBITDA collapse obscures that they're strategically trading near-term EBITDA for multi-year contracts with 40% lower maintenance capex. The binding constraint isn't demand or execution, it's their unwillingness to commit growth capital beyond the fifth FORCE fleet while simultaneously accelerating diesel retirement, creating a fleet count ceiling that caps growth. Management's tell: 'We don't need activity to really improve our prospects per se.' My view changes if they announce owned fleet additions or Q3 EBITDA bounces above $80M.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper: They're harvesting diesel fleets faster than expected while lease accounting masks the true economics of electric transition
  • The obvious miss but it's actually strategic: Q2 EBITDA down 29% but free cash flow UP 17% sequentially
  • The vanishing metric: They stopped reporting DSO and shifted from 'effective fleet utilization' to just 'active fleets'
