Bottom line
The sleeper story is Micron's AI-driven manufacturing advantage: 30-40% productivity gains and 5x wafer analysis improvements are creating a cost moat the market isn't pricing in. Yes, record revenue and margins matter, but the binding constraint is now assembly and test capacity for HBM, not front-end wafer production. Management's confidence is justified: 'We believe Micron's HBM4 outperforms all competing HBM4 products, delivering industry-leading performance as well as best-in-class power efficiency.' The elevated CapEx ($18B+ implied for fiscal 2026) is the price for maintaining technology leadership in a supply-constrained environment. My view changes if free cash flow doesn't inflect positive by Q2 2026 despite their confident guidance for significantly higher annual FCF.

The 30-second version

  • AI productivity gains are quietly becoming Micron's biggest cost advantage
  • HBM4 outperforming by 40% isn't just specs; it's pricing power
  • DDR4/LPDDR4 shortage creates artificial supply discipline across DRAM
