Bottom line
The sleeper story is that KEY chose expensive wholesale funding over deposit repricing, betting everything on $3B of deposit inflows materializing in H2, a risky gambit that reveals deeper funding stress than the stable deposit cost metric suggests. Yes, they grew C&I loans 3%, but it's all investment grade at compressed spreads, making their 3% NIM target increasingly dependent on mechanical fixed asset repricing rather than fundamental improvement. The binding constraint is their unwillingness to pay for deposits in a market where quality relationships require quality pricing. Clark's admission that they 'chose to fill that with wholesale funds rather than reprice' is the tell. My view changes if they actually deliver the 2% deposit growth without having to reprice, but that's looking increasingly unlikely given the wholesale funding bridge they've already built.

The 30-second version

  • The wholesale funding bridge is the real story: management chose expensive wholesale funding over repricing deposits, betting on $3B deposit inflows that better materialize
  • C&I loan growth of 3% looks great until you realize it's all investment grade at tighter spreads, crushing NIM expansion
  • Investment banking's 20% guide for Q3 is suspect given pipelines haven't converted and middle market M&A remains frozen
