Bottom line
The sleeper story is KEY's specialty finance lending machine-$7.6B of 98% investment grade, bankruptcy-remote lending that's more infrastructure finance than risky private credit. While everyone fixates on NDFI reclassifications, this is their most profitable, lowest-risk business scaling rapidly. The obvious headline is strong loan growth and NIM expansion, but the binding constraint is deposit funding-they're burning brokered CDs faster than they're growing client deposits, creating a funding squeeze if loan growth accelerates. Gorman admitted they 'may be at an inflection point' on commercial loan pricing power, but that's still a maybe after years of spread compression. My view changes if they can't grow client deposits at 5%+ annually or if middle market M&A fails to materialize by Q3, forcing them to choose between loan growth and margin expansion.

The 30-second version

  • Private credit isn't the sleeper story-it's their specialty finance lending printing 98% investment grade returns
  • NIM expansion story accelerating but deposit remix creating hidden vulnerability
  • Investment banking confidence quietly downgraded despite 'record pipelines'
