Bottom line
The 17% headcount cut is Goodarzi admitting the company got bloated while chasing AI dreams, classic 'fix the roof while sun is shining' except the sun is setting on DIY tax. TurboTax Live crossing 50% of revenue is genuinely impressive, but they're hemorrhaging share at the low end and just admitted they can't compete on price. The binding constraint is their business model: they're trying to be both a software company AND a services company, and the consumption pricing pivot shows they don't know how to price the hybrid. Management claims 'we're structurally advantaged for 90% of TAM' but that's precisely what Blockbuster said about stores. My view changes if Live can sustain 30%+ growth for two more years without margin compression.

The 30-second version

  • The 17% headcount reduction is about structural inefficiency, not AI displacement
  • TurboTax lost the price war at the low end, but Live is now 53% of revenue
  • Mailchimp is getting 'rightsized' after consumption model tests show surprising AI+HI demand
