Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't AI hype, it's that WDC has contractually locked in essentially 100% of next year's revenue with binding agreements from just 5 customers, something unprecedented in HDD history. Yes, they delivered a blowout quarter with 41.3% gross margins, but the binding constraint remains the 12-month head wafer lead times that physically prevent them from capturing additional demand even at these margins. Most revealing quote: 'We currently have firm POs or LTAs with all of our top 5 hyperscale customers covering our entire fiscal year 2026.' The DSO deterioration and sudden refusal to disclose unit ASP are yellow flags in an otherwise fortress-like business model. My view changes if DSO hits 60 days or any major customer pushes out deliveries.

The 30-second version

  • The real story: WDC has locked in 100% of FY26 revenue with firm POs/LTAs from top 5 hyperscalers
  • The obvious 'AI drives everything' narrative delivered a 30% revenue beat, but the constraint is head wafer production
  • They stopped disclosing ASP per unit and DSO deteriorated from 46 to 52 days
