Bottom line
The sleeper story is enterprise SSD doubling its bit mix target to 15-20% with the NVIDIA qualification providing a competitive moat, not the headline margin beat everyone will focus on. The market sees record HDD margins and assumes peak cycle, but the 2-6 quarter customer agreements fundamentally change this from a commodity to a subscription business. The binding constraint isn't demand or technology, it's their unwillingness to add capacity without iron-clad customer commitments, which actually supports sustainable margins. Management's quote that they have 'visibility for the entire fiscal year from a number of our biggest customers' is the tell that this transformation is real. My view changes if the third hyperscaler UltraSMR ramp disappoints or if enterprise SSD ASPs crack.

The 30-second version

  • Enterprise SSD mix jumping to 15% of Flash bits is the real story, not the headline beat
  • Record HDD margins of 38.1% look sustainable as third hyperscaler adopts UltraSMR
  • Separation financing 'anticipated to start soon' suggests complexity beyond original timeline
