Bottom line
The sleeper story is that VIAV's core growth engine is decelerating rapidly while management hides behind segment consolidation and narrative pivots. NSE growth collapsed from 23% to 15% YoY while margins imploded 570 bps sequentially, blamed on vague 'year-end costs.' The supposed data center strength Oleg keeps pitching is actually weakening, evidenced by their refusal to give specific growth rates anymore. The binding constraint is clearly margin pressure from competition and tariffs that they claim is 'mitigated' while cash flow says otherwise. Most revealing quote: when asked about data center size, Oleg deflected with 'roughly 30% of NSE' instead of growth rates. My view changes if Q1 NSE margins return above 8% with accelerating revenue growth, proving this was truly one-time.

The 30-second version

  • Data center ecosystem revenue is actually decelerating, not accelerating
  • NSE margins collapsed 570 bps sequentially to 4.7% while revenue grew
  • Tariff mitigation claims look suspect given cash flow deterioration
