Bottom line
The sleeper story is VIAV is deliberately tanking OSP margins by 1-3 points to clear inventory, creating an artificial headwind that vanishes in two quarters for easy beats. The Street sees 'recovery' with NSE beating guidance, but the mix is deteriorating as high-margin wireless gets pushed out while lower-margin field instruments drive the beat. The binding constraint isn't demand, it's collection: they stopped disclosing DSO after talking it up last quarter, classic tell that receivables are stretching. Oleg's quote about 'run for the hills has become a market share grab' sounds great but he's describing customer behavior, not VIAV's execution. My view changes if wireless actually ships revenue in calendar Q1 or if they restore receivables disclosure showing DSO below 75 days.

The 30-second version

  • The Inventory Dump Strategy Is Killing Margins While Everyone Celebrates Recovery
  • Service Provider Recovery Is Real But The Mix Is Worse Than Headlines Suggest
  • They Stopped Disclosing DSO and Individual Customer Concentration
