Bottom line
The sleeper story everyone will miss: TSM is panic-building N3 capacity globally because AI demand visibility is so overwhelming they're abandoning their historical capital discipline. Yes, the obvious headline is monster Q1 results and raised guidance, but the real story is they're breaking their own rule of not adding capacity after a node reaches target. The binding constraint isn't demand (which is infinite) or even money (they have $106B cash) - it's the 2-3 year physics of building fabs, which means this supply crunch runs through 2027. As C.C. Wei told hyperscalers: 'silicon from TSMC is the bottleneck.' My view changes if they start quantifying the Middle East chemical cost impact or if that OCF decline becomes a trend rather than timing.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper story: Global N3 capacity explosion signals panic, not confidence
  • AI demand is real but supply constraints won't ease until 2028-2029
  • Red flag: Chemical/gas cost inflation from Middle East situation could hit margins
