Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't RAC or Lightstream, it's that six weeks into the job, Mike Lyons has already traded a hard, falsifiable '>14% ROTCE in 2026' commitment for 'on track to do what we said we would do', and cut the buyback pace to ~$1 billion from $1.2 billion while blaming it on 'the ongoing strategic review.' The obvious headline, $5.5B of RAC sold and $7.7B of Lightstream agreed, is real and accretive, but it's balance-sheet cleanup, not evidence of the growth investments management keeps promising. The binding constraint is time and sequencing, not capital: Lyons himself admits 'even if you had the money, you can't just wake up and snap your finger and spend all of the money', which means nothing concrete shows up until January 2027 at the earliest. My view changes if January's strategic update actually quantifies the expense-reallocation 'sources' with real dollar figures and a dated ROTCE bridge; if it's another round of 'more to come,' the market should start pricing in execution risk on the whole turnaround thesis.

The 30-second version

  • The 'sources and uses' review is capital-return triage disguised as a growth story
  • RAC and Lightstream sales are real, accretive, and the obvious headline - but they're also a credit-risk cleanup, not a growth catalyst
  • The 16-18% ROTCE target just got softer language, not a softer number
