Bottom line
TFC killed $7-8B of annual consumer loan production mid-quarter without warning, accepting massive NII headwinds to juice ROTCE via balance sheet shrinkage rather than growth. The market sees 37% EPS growth, but it's built on tax games (14.5% rate), exits not expansion, and disappearing disclosures around deposit costs. The binding constraint is deposit mix deterioration: DDA dropping to 25% by year-end means they're losing the core funding war despite all the Premier Banking happy talk. 'We discontinued the origination of marine and recreational vehicle loans, and we significantly reduced originations in several other less strategic and less profitable consumer lending units.' My view changes if they can hold DDA above 26% or show net new deposit growth excluding rate arbitrage.

The 30-second version

  • The real story: Marine/RV exit and 40% consumer loan production cuts signal a massive strategic pivot nobody's pricing in
  • The obvious: NII guide cut from 3-4% to 1-1.5% but bottom line 'unchanged'
  • The metric that vanished: DSO disappeared, replaced with vague 'healthy client deposit activity' while deposit costs only fell 1bp
