Bottom line
The sleeper story is project finance tax alpha - this business is generating massive recurring tax benefits that aren't showing up in revenue but are driving 550bp of tax rate improvement. Everyone will focus on the 25% EPS growth, but the real story is sustainable tax rate benefits providing permanent earnings lift. The binding constraint is deposit competition - they're understating pricing pressure and had to lower NII guidance despite loan growth momentum. Rogers' most revealing quote: 'We view 15% ROTCE as an important milestone, not the endpoint' - signaling confidence beyond current targets. My view changes if project finance tax benefits prove one-time rather than recurring, or if deposit costs inflect higher faster than their low-50s beta assumption.

The 30-second version

  • Project finance business is hiding massive tax alpha that nobody's modeling
  • Investment Banking hitting escape velocity but trading the real driver
  • They stopped talking about specific AI monetization and went full enterprise speak
