Bottom line
The sleeper story is aluminum profitability arriving 2-3 quarters early - hitting EBITDA positive at just 20% capacity utilization suggests much higher margins than expected. The obvious headline is seasonal Q4 weakness, but the real story is Steel Dynamics sitting on $1.4B of through-cycle EBITDA that hasn't been realized yet. The binding constraint is working capital - aluminum's $155M Q4 cash drag and $50M annual structural increase is the hidden governor on cash generation through the ramp. Millett's most revealing quote: 'The 650,000 metric ton project is no longer a vision. It's clearly here.' This isn't about steel anymore, it's about becoming a diversified metals company. My view changes if aluminum utilization stalls below 75% by mid-2026 or if working capital requirements prove higher than the $50M annual run rate.

The 30-second version

  • BlueScope bid rejection reveals Steel Dynamics has $5B+ acquisition firepower
  • Free cash flow inflection is here but working capital is the hidden drag
