Bottom line
The sleeper story everyone's missing: Riot just went 'full spec' on data center construction after three quarters of claiming they wouldn't, committing $214M to build 112MW of Core & Shell without a single tenant commitment or even disclosed LOI. The obvious 'transformation to data center company' narrative is pure hopium when Bitcoin mining still generates 89% of revenue and 100% of gross profit. The binding constraint isn't power or location, it's credibility: no hyperscaler will bet critical infrastructure on an unproven Bitcoin miner playing developer. Jason Les admits 'I can't comment specifically on any ongoing discussions,' which after nine months means there aren't any. My view changes if they announce even one Fortune 500 tenant by Q1 2026, but building on spec suggests they've already lost the hyperscaler race.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper: Riot just launched $214M of speculative data center construction WITHOUT a tenant, betting they can negotiate better terms with buildings underway
  • The obvious headline: Riot is 'transforming' into a data center company, but Bitcoin mining still funds everything
  • The red flag: Management completely stopped disclosing customer pipeline metrics after talking up 'ongoing discussions' for three quarters
