Bottom line
The sleeper story is that MACOM just revealed they're buying Wolfspeed's RF business at a 3-year payback multiple, essentially getting it for free after year three, which nobody's properly modeling. The obvious data center 'strength' is actually admitted volatility: management confessed it's all project ramps, not sustainable demand. The binding constraint is customer deployment timing in data center and complete demand absence in telecom, not technology or execution. CEO Daly: 'We are not good at predicting the future and we would definitely get it wrong.' My view changes if telecom bookings inflect positive or if Wolfspeed integration disrupts the base business.

The 30-second version

  • The Wolfspeed RF acquisition is the real story: MACOM is buying 3 years of cash flow for the purchase price
  • Data Center grew 52% sequentially but it's all volatile project-based revenue, not sustainable demand
  • Telecom collapsed to a 3-4 year low and management stopped giving recovery timelines
