Bottom line
The sleeper story is MACOM's defense business is about to inflect with two new product lines launching in weeks, not quarters, while the Street fixates on data center volatility. Yes, data center grew 16% but the ACC opportunity just got structurally smaller and 800G is rolling over faster than expected. The binding constraint is Lowell fab utilization: until base telecom/industrial recovers, they're stuck at 57-58% gross margins regardless of mix improvements. Most revealing quote: 'lower wafer volumes going through our Lowell fab, resulting in under absorbed costs.' My view changes if they can show Lowell utilization above 80% or provide credible path to $30M+ quarterly telecom growth.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper: Defense business is about to go parabolic with TWO unannounced product lines launching in March/June
  • Data center grew 16% sequentially to $65.3M, but the real story is the 1.6T transition is happening NOW, not later
  • Gross margins guided flat at 57-58% despite record backlog: the Lowell fab utilization problem is WORSE than they're letting on
