Bottom line
The sleeper story is defense becoming MACOM's real growth engine with record revenues, doubling Navy contracts, and $29M in government funding while everyone fixates on volatile data center swings. The Street sees 15% data center growth next quarter and celebrates, but management just admitted they missed their NPI targets by 70% and can't get their fab utilization right, which explains why margins are stuck. The binding constraint isn't demand, it's execution: they can't introduce products fast enough or run their fabs efficiently enough to capitalize on their opportunities. CEO Daly's admission that 'we fell short of our goal' on NPIs while sitting on record backlog tells you everything. My view changes if they hit 60% gross margins in any quarter of FY25, proving they've fixed operations.

The 30-second version

  • 1.6T data center ramp is real with record backlog, but management stopped giving visibility windows
  • Defense is quietly becoming the real growth engine while everyone obsesses over AI data centers
  • They missed their own NPI targets by 70% and fab utilization remains 'not optimal', killing margins
