Bottom line
The sleeper story everyone's missing: Marvell's custom HBM and multi-die packaging platforms are becoming the real competitive moat, not just another AI chip play. While the market obsesses over XPU socket competition, Murphy buried the lead on their production-ready advanced packaging platform that enables 'more efficient die-to-die interconnect, lower power consumption, increased yields, and lower product cost.' The obvious headline is another record quarter with 63% revenue growth, but the binding constraint is gross margin compression from custom mix shift hitting 59.8% despite record revenue. Murphy's most revealing quote: 'Given the volumes that have materialized, it's certainly possible customers may be pursuing multiple paths to meet requirements' - that's management acknowledging competition while staying confident on their revenue trajectory. My view changes if operating cash flow doesn't recover next quarter or if they stop providing custom revenue mix transparency at the June 17 investor day.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper story: Custom HBM and multi-die packaging are quietly becoming the real growth drivers
  • AI revenue acceleration masked by gross margin compression from custom mix shift
  • Management confidence regressing on timeline specificity despite securing 3nm capacity
