Bottom line
The real story isn't the 30 exahash expansion everyone's cheering, it's that IREN just achieved 28% power cost reduction through spot pricing after getting burned on hedges, fundamentally improving their mining economics. The market sees growth, but I see a company that just lost its anchor AI customer and immediately reversed course on GPU expansion while shopping its crown jewel 1.4GW development site through Morgan Stanley. The binding constraint is capital allocation confidence: they don't trust the AI opportunity enough to invest despite claiming great performance metrics. Management admitted 'my appetite to go and dilute shareholders and take on debt, to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on spec to build out an AI Cloud Service business is frankly quite low.' My view changes if they sign a multi-year AI contract over $50M or successfully monetize the Texas site above $5/watt.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper: Spot power pricing at Childress is the real game-changer, not the hashrate expansion
  • 30 exahash by December sounds impressive but Morgan Stanley is shopping their 1.4GW Texas site
  • Poolside extending then immediately leaving is the red flag nobody's discussing
