Bottom line
The sleeper story is that HOMB's blowout Q4 loan growth number is largely a mirage: $150 million in payoffs simply didn't happen on schedule, and management is already warning that reversal will 'dampen early loan growth expectations' in 2026. The obvious headline, a record $475M FY25 net income and sub-40% efficiency ratio, is real, but the sequential slip in adjusted EPS and ROA plus an opportunistically-timed reserve build ('we had a little extra money, and I thought it was a good time') tell you PPNR quality was flattered this quarter. The binding constraint here isn't demand, it's credit resolution velocity: the DFW apartment sale that was 'pleased to announce' last quarter fell apart, and the Texas C&I credit is in its third straight quarter of 'stay tuned' with zero forward progress disclosed. My view changes if Q1 2026 shows organic (non-payoff-driven) loan growth holding above mid-single digits and the Texas C&I credit actually resolves rather than drifting to another 'stay tuned.'

The 30-second version

  • The $400M loan growth 'beat' was a timing accident, not demand
  • Record year, but sequential EPS and ROA actually declined into year-end
  • The loan-growth 'scorecard' from last quarter vanished, and the DFW sale that was supposed to close just blew up
