Bottom line
The sleeper story is that HOMB's organic engine is stalling just as MCB arrives to paper over it: ending loans fell $50M this quarter, Hester expects the downward trend to continue into Q2 on ~$1 billion of projected payoffs each of the next two quarters, and only Mountain Commerce's $1.4 billion loan add keeps the balance sheet growing. The obvious headline, a clean $118.2M quarter and 2.09% ROA, is real but the margin has already rolled over to 4.51% core from 4.56%, and management is explicit that MCB will add pressure before it adds savings: "we expect a little pressure at least initially on the margin". The binding constraint isn't demand, it's the back-office systems conversion, pushed to November, which delays MCB cost saves to "probably late 2026". Layer on a $110M Texas credit that finally broke after being monitored for a year and a half, and two previously-touted metrics (efficiency ratio, loan-to-deposit ratio) going silent this quarter, and you have a well-capitalized, well-reserved bank whose easy growth is behind it for now. My view changes if organic ex-MCB loan balances turn positive by Q3 and the efficiency ratio reappears with a number that still starts with a 3.

The 30-second version

  • Organic loan growth is quietly rolling over, and MCB is the only thing masking it
  • Headline 2.09% ROA and $118.2M net income look clean, but the margin already turned and MCB adds pressure before it adds savings
  • The $110 million Texas credit finally broke, and two formerly-headlined metrics quietly vanished
