Bottom line
The sleeper story everyone's missing: Motion's industrial business is coiled for massive operating leverage with cost structure 'set up nicely for rebound' just as PMI finally turned positive in January for first time in 11 months. While the market obsesses over the separation announcement, the real story is deteriorating automotive fundamentals - North America EBITDA down 14% on flat sales with independent owners struggling and Europe 'deteriorating sequentially' each month. The binding constraint isn't market conditions, it's their dependence on financially stressed independent owners who represent roughly half their sales but can't afford to restock inventory at current interest rates. Most revealing quote from Stengel: 'We flatly expected momentum to maintain in Q4, unfortunately that was not the case.' My view changes if independent owner sales turn positive or if Motion delivers on the promised operating leverage with sustained PMI above 50.
