Bottom line
The sleeper story is Motion Industrial crushing it with 10% EBITDA growth while everyone fixates on NAPA's independent owner disaster, where the channel disparity (top quartile at 5%, bottom presumably negative) reveals a broken franchise model. Management's unprompted denial of competitor discussions actually confirms the Auto business is in play; with $250M of stranded costs post-separation, it's uneconomic as a standalone. The binding constraint isn't the Iran conflict ($16M is noise), it's the structural inability to fix thousands of subscale independent owners who control NAPA's destiny. 'We're not currently in discussions with any competitor' is exactly what you say when you were recently in discussions. My view changes if independent owner comps accelerate above 3% next quarter, proving the model is fixable.

The 30-second version

  • The Iran conflict is a $16M quarterly smokescreen for a deeper problem: independent NAPA owners only growing 1.5% while company stores crush at 4%+
  • Motion Industrial quietly accelerated to 10% EBITDA growth with expanding margins while everyone obsesses over auto
  • Management swears they're not in M&A talks with competitors, but the lady doth protest too much
