Bottom line
The sleeper story is beef inflation accidentally creating a value moat - when grocery beef costs are punitive, LongHorn looks like a deal even at $16+ entrees. Traffic grew across all demos including sub-$50k at LongHorn while that cohort pulled back elsewhere. Management's most telling quote: guests are 'actually going to LongHorn instead of eating at home' because the price gap flipped. The binding constraint is hedging coverage at only 45% for the back half, meaning margin recovery depends entirely on commodity markets, not operational improvement. My view changes if beef stays elevated past Q1 2027 - at that point this becomes a structural margin reset, not a temporary commodity spike.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper story: Beef inflation is creating a value moat for Darden vs grocery stores
  • 4.3% same-store sales beats but margin compression is the real story
  • Olive Garden's lighter portions rollout acceleration signals urgency on traffic retention
