Bottom line
The market will cheer the AWS validation, but the real story is CIFR burned their entire bitcoin hedge in one quarter, converting every growth site to HPC with no Plan B if AI demand softens. Yes, landing AWS directly is impressive ('the first bitcoin miner to sign a 15-year direct hyperscaler lease'), but the binding constraint is construction financing; they need to raise billions in debt with no firm commitments yet. Most revealing quote: 'ink is still drying on the deal we signed with AWS,' meaning terms aren't even final. My view changes if they announce committed construction financing at reasonable rates within 30 days, otherwise these are just very expensive press releases.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper: AWS deal proves bitcoin miners can directly lease to hyperscalers, not just middlemen
  • The obvious: Two HPC deals totaling $8.5B in contract revenue sounds transformational
  • The vanishing metric: They stopped disclosing bitcoin production costs per site
