Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Cipher just abandoned its Bitcoin mining focus for a 2.5-year HPC moonshot with zero contracted revenue, while post-halving economics destroyed profitability despite Bitcoin at $65,000. Management's claim of 'months' of HPC discussions that were never previously disclosed suggests either poor governance or reactive scrambling. The binding constraint isn't power or sites, it's credibility: they're now a Bitcoin miner with compressed margins pivoting to compete against established data center REITs with massive head starts. Tyler's tell: 'We get outbid for built sites. Frankly, we think people overpay.' Translation: we can't compete on existing assets so we're betting the company on unproven development. My view changes if they sign a named hyperscaler lease in Q3, but the 2.5-year timeline suggests they're nowhere close.

The 30-second version

  • HPC pivot is real with 1.7GW pipeline, but zero contracted revenue and 2.5 year timeline
  • Depreciation accounting change masks margin pressure as hash costs hit $43/petahash
  • Management narrative regressed from 'we will' to 'we're exploring' on every major initiative
