Bottom line
The sleeper story is China supply chain localization happening faster than expected - they're ahead of schedule and this should drive both cost savings and market share gains in the world's largest EV market. The obvious headline is gross margin disaster in Q4, but Derek was unusually specific about the 200 bps being quarterly specific items, suggesting March really is the trough. The binding constraint remains North America and Europe inventory digestion, which management admits 'is taking longer than expected' especially in Europe where there are now 'structural issues.' Most revealing quote: 'We don't really have any real competition in China' per an investor report - unusually confident language that suggests they're winning the China EV semiconductor battle. My view changes if China localization doesn't deliver the promised gross margin benefits by mid-2025 or if the March margin trough call proves wrong.

The 30-second version

  • China supply chain qualification beats expectations: shipping from local OSATs Q4, fab qualification in process
  • Bookings hit 8-quarter high, up 50% YoY, but December guide still down 6% at midpoint
  • Gross margin guidance disaster: 200 bps of 'quarterly specific' headwinds in Q4
