Bottom line
The useful test is execution against a higher earnings floor and the remaining balance-sheet target. Adjusted EPS guidance is now at least $20.50, while debt-to-capital rose from 41.2% to 41.7% against a target to approach 40% by year-end. Medicare margins are expected near the top of the 2%-4% range, but commercial cost pressure continues to lengthen recovery. The earnings release reports $5.1 billion of operating cash flow, 47.0 days claims payable and a 12.8% operating cost ratio. Their absence from the spoken remarks is not evidence that these disclosures vanished. Watch the Q4 leverage outcome and the next quantified commercial recovery update.

The 30-second version

  • Higher earnings floor, but commercial recovery still takes time
  • Leverage rose despite the year-end reduction target
  • Do not confuse call omissions with missing financial disclosure
