Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Optimus's production target quietly compressed from an '10 million units a year' aspiration last quarter to a much more modest 20,000 units a week (about 1 million annualized) that's still 'at least a year' away, and nobody on the call pushed back. The obvious headline, exponential robotaxi mile growth and strong margin recovery, is real but the binding constraint isn't demand or even software, it's unit economics: management flatly admitted 'Are we at our goal of 30 cents today? No', while 24/7 operations and higher speed roads remain pending 'by the end of this year'. Layer on a mid-cycle CapEx guidance cut from more than $25 billion to approximately $20 billion and a brand-new blanket ban on SpaceX merger questions, and the picture is less clean than the margin beats suggest. My view changes if Tesla discloses an actual robotaxi cost-per-mile figure or Optimus unit cost next quarter; continued qualitative hand-waving on both would confirm visibility is worse than the stock's momentum implies.

The 30-second version

  • The Optimus production target quietly shrank by 10x and nobody asked about it
  • Robotaxi 'exponential growth' headline masks an admitted miss on unit economics
  • SpaceX merger talk went from open discussion to a hard gag order
