Bottom line
The sleeper story is contract economics mastery - while other utilities chase data center gigawatts at any price, Southern has cracked minimum bill structures that guarantee cost recovery whether facilities actually consume power or not. The obvious headline about massive capex misses that they've already de-risked 78% of the equity financing through forwards extending to 2027. The binding constraint isn't capital access or regulatory approval - it's turbine delivery and EPC capacity for their 10 GW Georgia buildout. Womack's most revealing line: 'We're not promotional... we're not talking about any nonbinding conversation' suggests they're seeing competitive desperation while maintaining discipline. My view changes if the December 19 Georgia PSC decision approves less than 8 GW or if customer additions stay below 12,000 for two more quarters.

The 30-second version

  • SLEEPER: Contract velocity is accelerating while peers struggle with data center economics
  • The $76B capex story is real but equity financing is actually de-risked
  • Nuclear pivot language softening despite federal tailwinds
