Bottom line
The market sees 17GW of data center growth and assumes it's all gravy, but SO is already 1GW oversubscribed in Georgia and entirely dependent on winning RFPs they don't control. The OpenAI demand response innovation is genuinely revolutionary for utility economics, yet management buried it like a footnote. The binding constraint isn't demand, it's regulatory approval for new capacity, and they've got a 2-year visibility hole until RFP decisions. Most revealing quote: 'Southern's not going to be next' on nuclear, showing they're done with mega-project risk. My view changes if they win less than 3GW in the Georgia RFP, which breaks the growth narrative.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper: OpenAI's 1GW demand response is the first crack in baseload economics
  • The obvious: 17GW contracted data center load by mid-2030s looks amazing until you realize they're already out of approved capacity
  • The red flag: They stopped disclosing DSO and specific collateral structures while pivoting to 'A minus or better' language
