Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't the traffic streak, it's that SHAK just discontinued quarterly guidance and let its 2025-2027 targets quietly vanish from the press release in the exact quarter restaurant margin flipped from +50bps to -90bps YoY and missed its own Q2 margin guide by over 100bps. The obvious headline, four straight quarters of positive traffic, is real but increasingly a unit-growth and app-acquisition story rather than a core-business reacceleration; the app driving the 'nearly 30%' comp growth is still 'just over 10%' of total mix. The binding constraint remains beef inflation, now running mid-teens and still elevated into July, not demand. The tell: "we have made the decision to move away from providing quarterly guidance while continuing to provide annual guidance", said in the same breath as guiding adjusted EBITDA and net income 'to the low end of our ranges'. My view changes if Q3 shows restaurant-level margin returning to YoY expansion and management publishes a specific, numbered 2027 target instead of deferring the review again.

The 30-second version

  • They just quietly killed the guidance regime that let you check their work every 90 days
  • Headline traffic streak (4 quarters positive) masks a comp deceleration and a margin miss vs. their OWN guide
  • FY EBITDA guidance has now been cut twice without a clean reconciliation
