Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Stifel stopped giving you the one disclosure that actually matters for a bank growing its balance sheet by $4 billion next year: hard credit metrics. NPA ratio, provision expense, and allowance-to-loans all vanished this quarter, replaced by 'Look, minuscule? I mean, none' right after a direct question about private credit contagion. The obvious headline, record $1.56B revenue and $2.63 EPS, is real, but the institutional growth rate is quietly decelerating (34% to 28% YoY) while management leans on a self-disclaimed 'capacity utilization' metric ('don't quote me on those numbers') to justify the ECM share story. The binding constraint here isn't demand, it's disclosure discipline: management is happy to give you precise numbers when they flatter (recruiting, IB, 2026 revenue scope) and conspicuously vague when they don't (credit quality, fee-asset reconciliation, capacity). My view changes if next quarter's 10-Q shows credit metrics deteriorating in a way that explains this quarter's silence, or if they restore the NPA/provision/allowance disclosure unprompted.

The 30-second version

  • Credit disclosure quietly goes dark right when private credit fear is spiking
  • Record Q4 ($1.56B revenue, $2.63 EPS) is real, but the growth engine is narrowing to bank M&A and ECM share-shift, not broad-based momentum
  • The $10B revenue / $1T asset target just lost its timeline, not its number
