Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the record H1 print, it's that organic growth has been stuck at 'low single digits' for two quarters running while management lets absolute AUM growth ($580B, +12%) do the talking, and that two previously detailed risk disclosures, the CLO book and software loan exposure, simply vanished from the call the same quarter credit headlines were fresh. The obvious headline is a beat-and-raise quarter with 13% revenue growth and 24% ROTCE, but the binding constraint is funding mix: cheap sweep and smart rate balances are shrinking while growth gets funded by costlier venture and treasury deposits, keeping NIM merely 'stable' rather than expanding. The tell on confidence comes from Ron himself when asked for a hard consolidated incremental margin number: 'I guess I haven't really thought of it that way', before pivoting to AI philosophy. My view changes if next quarter brings back the CLO/software loan disclosures and a specific recruiting production number, their reappearance would suggest this quarter's silence was benign; their continued absence would confirm something in that book is deteriorating.

The 30-second version

  • Organic growth is quietly flatlining while absolute AUM numbers do the talking
  • Record H1 ($2.9B revenue, $2.87 EPS) is real, but growth rates are decelerating under the hood
  • A 'national security' risk and a hard recruiting number both disappeared from the script
