Bottom line
The sleeper story everyone's missing: Regions is riding a massive but finite asset repricing wave that's masquerading as sustainable NIM resilience. Their 125 bps front book/back book spread is a gift from the rate cycle, but adding $3.5B in forward swaps proves management knows the party is ending. The obvious headline about loan growth optimism is built on quicksand - pipelines may be up 80% but line utilization keeps falling and corporate customers are still hoarding cash. The binding constraint isn't demand, it's that their borrowers simply don't need money yet. As Turner admitted: 'until customers use some of that excess liquidity, probably not going to see a real increase in line utilization.' My view changes if line utilization stops declining or if their capital markets guidance proves conservative.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper story: Record-level asset repricing arbitrage masquerading as 'resilient' NIM
  • Loan growth optimism built on quicksand fundamentals
  • Capital markets revenue guidance telegraphs weakness they're not admitting
