Bottom line
The sleeper story is RF's deposit franchise quietly strengthening while competitors fight over loans: top quartile growth at lowest peer cost signals genuine competitive advantage. The obvious headline about modest loan growth masks the real story - they're purposefully shedding $1.2B in low-return leverage lending while pipelines doubled, setting up clean growth in 2026. The binding constraint isn't demand (pipelines up 100%), it's client liquidity hoarding with line utilization down 70+ bps. As John Turner noted, 'pipelines are almost doubled, and we are also experiencing nice increases in production' but 'customers use some of that liquidity excess liquidity' first. My view changes if Q4 NIM fails to reach mid-360s or if the $300M portfolio runoff extends beyond year-end.

The 30-second version

  • The deposit moat is quietly widening while everyone obsesses over loan growth
  • Portfolio shaping creates artificial loan growth headwind that ends in Q4
  • Wealth Management hits third consecutive record while Capital Markets notches new high
