Bottom line
The CEO change exposes a deeper execution crisis - this isn't about strategy, it's about PayPal's inability to deliver its own playbook after 18 months. The real sleeper story is how PSP and Venmo are quietly carrying the business while branded checkout - still over half their profit dollars - collapsed from 5% to 1% growth. Miller's admission that 'we were too optimistic about how quickly we could drive change' and the abandonment of 2027 targets destroys credibility. The binding constraint is merchant adoption speed - they built better products but can't get merchants to implement them fast enough. My view changes if branded checkout shows sustained acceleration above 3% within two quarters under new leadership.

The 30-second version

  • CEO CHANGE EXPOSES EXECUTION CRISIS - Leadership turnover for performance, not strategy
  • BRANDED CHECKOUT COLLAPSE - 1% growth is the new 5%, 4-point deceleration in Q4
  • ABANDONING 2027 TARGETS - No longer committing to specific multiyear outlook after 18 months
