Bottom line
PayPal is morphing into a subprime lending business dressed as a payments company, with financial services quietly becoming the growth engine while the core branded checkout stagnates at 2%. Management's claim that 'we moved quickly to simplify our organization' rings hollow when they're pre-spending $400M in savings that don't exist yet while non-transaction OPEX surges 8%. The binding constraint isn't competition or technology; it's that they're trying to fix a consumer relevance problem by narrowing focus to 'highest value segments' which is just admitting they're losing everyone else. Most telling quote: 'We're investing ahead of cost savings', which is corporate speak for betting money you don't have. My view changes if Q3 branded checkout exceeds 3% growth AND they deliver at least $100M in visible Q4 cost savings.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper: PayPal is quietly pivoting from a payments company to a consumer lending platform
  • Branded checkout 'stabilization' at 2% growth masks a concerning Europe deterioration
  • The $1.5B cost savings program is already being pre-spent on 'growth investments'
