Bottom line
The sleeper story is that OZK's Q2 margin 'beat' was a payoff-driven accident that management itself says won't repeat, with deposit costs now past their inflection point just as loan growth needs to reaccelerate to hit the reiterated mid-single-digit full-year guidance. The obvious headline, continued CIB-for-RESG diversification, is real, but the binding constraint is that RESG origination is structurally dead because of 'anti-business' city policies and crowded competitive capital, not a strategic choice, meaning OZK's growth engine runs through one newer, less battle-tested business line. What's quietly concerning: last quarter's detailed CIB headcount/efficiency disclosure disappeared entirely, special mention loans ticked up with a dismissive 'I wouldn't read too much into that', and IQHQ sits pass-rated into its final month before maturity with 'terms haven't been fully developed'. My view changes if the IQHQ extension gets done with disclosed, favorable terms well before the next call, or if Q3 average earning assets actually step up as Tim Hicks guided; if instead loan growth stays soft while deposit costs keep climbing, the margin story flips from tailwind to headwind fast.

The 30-second version

  • The NIM beat was a fluke of bad loan volume, not good execution, and it's already fading
  • CIB/RESG 'diversification' is being sold as strategy; it's actually a forced substitution for a dead origination market
  • The CIB build-out metrics that got a full Q&A last quarter vanished entirely this quarter

What changed this quarter

MetricQ1'26Q2'26Change
Net Interest Margin420 bps, described as 'really strong' with no caution flagged+4 bps QoQ improvement, guided to dip below 420 in H2Beat driven by one-time deposit cost cut + payoff timing, guided to reverse below prior level in H2
Full-year NIM/NII confidence toneUnqualified pride in margin management, 'that 420 net interest margin we have is... really strong''Cautious guidance on being able to equal or beat last year's net interest income number'Confidence downgrade on full-year NII
Average Earning Assets growth trajectoryExpected easing of RESG repayment headwinds into 2027, implying a steadier growth pathUp ~2% after Q1, then negative in Q2: 'we went backwards'Sequential miss vs internal expectation
RESG repayments (quarter)Headwinds expected to persist with gradual easing into 2027~$3.0B in Q2, approaching record pace, guided elevated into 2027Elevated payoff wave accelerating, guidance extended a full year further out
RESG payoffs (trailing 4 quarters)General acknowledgment that repayment headwinds would continue~$10 billion ('$9.95 billion')New absolute-dollar disclosure framed as 'massive recycling'
CIB loan book size vs RESGCIB expected to equal RESG in 2027CIB $7B+ vs RESG $15B+, crossover still '2027'Reaffirmed timeline, gap still 2x
CRE concentration / diversification rationaleDiversification framed around CIB catching RESG in size by 2027, no specific regulatory ratio citedNow under 300% CRE regulatory guideline; C&D targeted under 100% by year-end/early 2027New compliance milestone disclosed
Full-year loan growth guidanceGrowth expected to accelerate into 2027 behind CIB momentum, no specific annual percentage quotedReiterated mid-single digits despite negative Q2 earning-asset growthGuidance held despite a quarter that went backwards
Net charge-off framingGuidance tied to loss content of loans 'likely to pop in and out of classified status,' with expected small inflows'A little above the industry's Q1 number through six months,' hope to get back under for the yearBenchmark reframed from self-referential target to industry comparison
ACL / problem-asset loss framingLow leverage point on loans means 'you've got to burn through' all equity/mezz before the bank takes a loss$22M office + $3.7M life science charge-off, 'already reserved for in the previous quarter'ACL declining as pre-built reserves are realized, not from improving credit
