Bottom line
The sleeper story is that RESG's recovery, which management was 'very optimistic about' for 2027 just one quarter ago, quietly became a 2028 story this quarter, while everyone's attention stayed on CIB's headline growth. The obvious headline, CIB diversification across 42 niches absorbing pricing competition, is real but increasingly a game of whack-a-mole: compression in ABLG, fund finance, and lender finance is being offset by rotation into CBSF/EFG/NRG, not by pricing power. The binding constraint is competitive spread compression in CIB's more mature verticals, forcing continuous new-niche creation just to hold a 12bp edge on new originations. George Gleason's own words capture the hedge creeping into even the good stories: on the key IQHQ life science credit, he expects sponsor support to continue but adds 'we'll see'. My view changes if next quarter management restates a hard ACL dollar figure and buyback/dividend activity; if that silence continues alongside another RESG timeline slip, this becomes a capital allocation and credit-visibility story, not just a growth story.

The 30-second version

  • RESG's 'back to growth' story just quietly slipped a full year
  • CIB keeps growing, but the pricing is getting fought for, not given
  • Two headline capital-return metrics vanished from the call entirely
