Bottom line
The sleeper story everyone's missing: Real assets has quietly become the growth engine with 27% YoY AUM growth while direct lending slows, and Orent just had its best redemption quarter in 7 quarters. The BDC redemption hysteria was noise - only 6 basis points of AUM impact with 90% of investors not tendering. The binding constraint is fundraising execution, not portfolio performance: they've pushed back major fund launches by a full year twice now. Marc's most telling quote: 'We are working down our exposure to software given the level of uncertainty' - a major strategic pivot from the confidence they showed last quarter. My view changes if net originations don't recover by Q3 or if they miss the 58.5% margin target due to revenue pressure rather than controlled expense management.

The 30-second version

  • SLEEPER STORY: Real assets becoming the real growth engine while everyone obsesses over BDC redemptions
  • BDC redemption drama was a nothingburger - only 6 basis points of AUM impact
  • Software LTV deterioration finally quantified - but cushion remains massive
