Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the second guidance raise, it's that NGL throughput growth is increasingly low-margin ethane rather than high-margin C3+, and management admitted it almost in passing while the headline kept hammering 'record NGL throughput volumes'. The obvious headline, beat-and-raise plus a 1 GW power deal, is real, but the binding constraint is that a chunk of this quarter's upside came from opportunistic, arguably non-recurring shut-in volume as the Waha-Katy spread narrowed, not new contracted capacity. Walt Hulse's own words capture the tension: 'we might even be updating you in Q3' is a confident, almost promotional line for a company that in the same breath conceded AI data center commercialization 'has taken a little bit longer than what we had anticipated'. My view changes if Q3 shows the shut-in NGL volume and ethane-heavy mix reversing margin compression, or if management discloses an actual FID and dollar figure on any of the 'late stage' AI data center discussions rather than repeating the vague 'advanced discussions' framing for a third straight quarter.

The 30-second version

  • NGL 'record throughput' headline is masking a margin mix problem nobody is pricing in
  • Second guidance raise of the year looks clean, but a chunk of it is opportunistic, not structural
  • AI/data center timeline quietly slipped, and nobody on the call pushed back
