Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Newmont pulled Q3 production into Q2, creating an artificial beat now but setting up disappointment next quarter when production stays flat instead of growing. The record $2.2B FCF headline looks great until you realize they've exhausted their easy productivity wins (parking 50 units without impact means they were massively inefficient before) just as oil hits $100 and Ghana takes a bigger royalty bite. The binding constraint is they're out of operational flexibility: stockpiling ore, pulling forward production, parking equipment, all one-time moves already played. 'We have parked nearly 50 mining production units across the portfolio without affecting production' is the most revealing quote, essentially admitting prior waste. My view changes if oil drops back below $80 or they actually quantify productivity savings that exceed cost inflation.

The 30-second version

  • The real story: Q3 production already pulled forward into Q2, creating an artificial setup for a 'miss' next quarter
  • Record $2.2B free cash flow masks declining operational flexibility
  • Ghana's sliding scale royalty quietly eating margins while management celebrates 'cost discipline'
