Bottom line
The sleeper story is that capture rate collapsed from 112% to 93% in the same quarter MPC posted record EPS, and management's response was to reframe around a softer year-to-date number rather than defend the quarter. The obvious headline, record EBITDA and 100% utilization, is real, but it's largely a function of an extraordinary WCS blowout to minus $32 and a favorable macro, not proof the 'sustainable capture' story is intact. The binding constraint now isn't demand, reliability, or even crude sourcing; it's capital discipline on $3.4 billion of fresh divestiture cash that management explicitly chose not to quantify, telling analysts that detailed capital planning will come with the fourth quarter call in February. My view changes if the February call delivers a hard capex number and project list for the Gulf Coast reinvestment, if Q4 capture snaps back above 100%, and if management reconciles the $13.6B versus $12.3B cash discrepancy left dangling on this call.

The 30-second version

  • Capture rate cratered from 112% to 93% and nobody on the call wanted to dwell on it
  • Record EPS of $26.93 and $11.7B EBITDA is mostly the macro, not the machine
  • $3.4B divestiture, zero specifics on where the cash goes
